image - Roughly six kilometres from the city of Cottbus cSAC locality "Lacoma Wetlands" has been destroyed because of lignite mining. More than 300 years old ponds created habitat for many endangered plants and animals including otter.

Thursday trip
On Thursday afternoon we visited new built passages for otters. Up to now ten different road/railway passages were constructed within the area. The passages are one of the mitigation measures compensating habitat loss in Lacoma Wetlands as the road mortality is one of the highest risk factor in Eastern Germany.

Friday trip
The most important compensation measure is building up new or improving recent otter habitat. Four km of the River Spree have been renatulized with reconecting of existing oxbows and creating new ones permanently or temporarily connected with the main course of the river.

image - A new fish farming area of nine ponds covering the area of 113 hectares has been constructed. Reed and thousands of trees and bushes have been planted at the banks to promote quick development of bank side vegetation.
